AAPPN volunteers work to change Ingrezza PA

July 22, 2026 by AAPPN

Nurse practitioners that specialize in serious mental illness are now allowed to prescribe valbenzaine (Ingrezza) without needing to consult with a physician or neurologist. This change went into effect on June 1, 2026.

“This change was the result of some awesome teamwork and tenacity over the past 20 months,” said AAPPN Legislative Committee chair Kristine Highlander. She cited the testimony by AAPPN’s Anne Marie Patterson and the work of our colleagues at ARNPs United. Kristine worked with various volunteers and stakeholders during a two-year effort to change the PA.

“It’s a small change and a great example of the tremendous effort it takes to get things done in this system. And a great example of the positive impact we can have when we engage in advocacy beyond the WA legislative session.”
